Trustpilot review removal: the flag is the whole game
Trustpilot is the one major platform where a properly built flag shifts the burden of proof onto the reviewer. Get the flag right and weak reviews often fall away on their own. Get it wrong and you have spent your credibility for nothing.
Why Trustpilot behaves differently from Google
Trustpilot’s guidelines require a review to be based on a genuine buying or service experience with the company being reviewed. When a business flags a review and explains why that experience is in doubt, Trustpilot can ask the reviewer to document it — an order number, a receipt, a booking confirmation.
That single mechanism is the difference. On Google you are usually trying to prove a negative. On Trustpilot, a well-grounded flag asks the reviewer to prove a positive, and reviewers who were never customers frequently cannot.
The corollary matters just as much: flagging a genuine customer’s review wastes the mechanism and damages your standing with the platform. Trustpilot tracks how businesses use flagging.
- No genuine buying or service experience
- Review concerns a different company
- Harmful or illegal content, threats, discrimination
- Personal information about an identifiable individual
- Promotional content or spam
- Conflict of interest: competitors, staff, the business itself
- Content written or incentivised in exchange for compensation
- The review is negative
- You disagree with the customer’s account
- The complaint was already resolved privately
- The review is old
- It is hurting your TrustScore
Three things to do first
Search your own records properly
Reviewer display names often differ from the name on the order. Check email, phone and address before concluding there was no transaction. A flag that collapses on a basic check costs you more than the review.
Capture the evidence
Screenshot the review, the reviewer’s profile and their other reviews. If the account is new and reviewing several companies in your sector at once, that pattern is part of your case.
Decide whether a reply is better
If the person was a customer, flagging will fail and a measured public reply will serve you better. We will tell you when that is the situation rather than process a flag we expect to lose.
Threaten the reviewer
Contacting a reviewer with legal threats to force a deletion is prohibited under the FTC’s consumer review rule in the US, and it tends to end up published. It also voids any credibility your flag had.
How a Trustpilot case runs
Intake
The review URL and what you know about the reviewer.
Guideline assessment
We identify which guideline the review breaches, or confirm that none does and the flag should not be filed.
Flag with documentation
The flag states the guideline and the grounds. Trustpilot may then ask the reviewer for documentation of their experience.
Outcome or escalation
If the reviewer substantiates the experience, the review stays and we move to response strategy. If not, it generally comes down.
Trustpilot questions
Can a business delete a Trustpilot review?
No. A business can flag a review for breaching Trustpilot’s guidelines, but only Trustpilot can remove it.
How long does Trustpilot take to review a flag?
Trustpilot typically responds to a flag within several days. The reviewer is usually given the opportunity to provide proof of their experience, which extends the timeline.
What happens if the reviewer cannot prove the experience?
Trustpilot may remove a review if the reviewer does not supply documentation of a genuine buying or service experience when asked. This is the mechanism most fake-review cases on Trustpilot turn on.
Does flagging hurt my TrustScore?
Flagging itself does not. Flagging indiscriminately can, indirectly: Trustpilot monitors how businesses use the tool, and a pattern of unfounded flags undermines the weight of your legitimate ones.
Can I ask customers to post positive reviews to balance it out?
You can invite customers to review you, and Trustpilot supports that. What you cannot do is offer any incentive conditional on the review or its sentiment — that breaches Trustpilot’s guidelines and, in the US, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews.
Have your Trustpilot review assessed
Send the review URL and what you know. You will get a clear read on whether a flag is worth filing.
Review assessment request
No obligation. If there is no case, we will tell you that.
